Why this work matters

1 in 4older adults falls every year
#1cause of injury death after 65
2xone fall doubles the chance of another
1 in 3adults over 50 report loneliness

Falling and being alone make each other worse. Isolation raises the risk of a fall, and a fall pushes a person deeper into isolation. Breathe was started to break that cycle.

Founding

Our mission.

Celance leaves the 99 to find the one.

Celance does not take every case. We take the hard ones. Severe injuries. Claims that have stalled. People other offices turned away. We charge nothing and take no share of any recovery.

The Foundation was inspired by our Senior Medical Advisor. He and the Founder are friends. They serve the same mission.

Where the standard comes from

The Senior Medical Advisor, serving strictly on a volunteer basis, learned that duty on a humanitarian mission in Cambodia. The people he was sent to serve had no country and no citizenship, and they were living on riverbanks and in floating villages. When something went wrong they got blamed for it, and when there was protection to go around they were last in line. That was the assignment. Stay with the people who had nowhere else to go.

The language of Cambodia is Khmer. He learned Vietnamese instead, because that is who he was sent to serve: the people in the most need, in a country already dangerous for everyone. He taught families and children.

Decades of war left landmines and unexploded bombs in the ground. Many are still there. No one knows exactly how many people those wars killed. The border with Thailand is still in dispute.

When it became too dangerous, he was among those taken to safety in Thailand. He stayed until return was possible. The safe choice would have been to leave the work behind. He did not. When the mission could continue, he continued.

The numbers below count landmines and unexploded bombs only. They do not count poverty, disease, or the rest of the war.

Cleared land is now farms, schools, and hospitals. The work he began has not ended. In 2026 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints dedicated a temple in Phnom Penh. Cambodia has set 2035 to clear the mines that remain.

He later became a hand surgeon for working people. From field service, surgery, and that same faith came one fixed rule:

No duty to help, even a sacred one, gives anyone the right to bend the truth.

Years later that standard reached the Founder. After the Founder nearly lost his life, the Advisor stayed and told the truth. Celance exists to do the same for people facing serious injury: stay with them and tell them the truth.
